Carlo Antonio Testore (b 1693; d c1765), Milan
Carlo Antonio Testore was the son and pupil of Carlo Giuseppe, but his instruments are generally less distinguished than those of his father. The influence of Giovanni Grancino, the father of Milanese violin making, is still visible in his work. (excerpted from Four Centuries of Violin Making by Tim Ingles.

I have been a reconstructing violins for about 30 years.  I have reconstructed alot of fiddles during this time.  i acquired a fiddle about three years ago that caught my attention because of its superb yellow ground.  the varnish is mostly in tact, and is golden brown.  the back inside has clear tracks from a rasp.  it is not symetrical and the purfling is scribed.  it is labeled testore, but i never gave that a thought.  i assumed when i picked it up to be probably 19th century.  a friend of mine, a violinmaker of fair reputation, thought it french, but agreed with me about the varnish.  this morning, i took the top off for the first time to fix a wing crack and block.  the inside to me looks just different than the french and german i have worked on.  the thing unique to me is there appears to be a circular stamp inside the instrument on the neck block about 1/4 inch across that is similar to the eagle brand on testore fiddles.  any thoughts?  thanks alot!!

Dear Phil,

Thanks for the help.  Here are the pictures of the violin.  Most of the dark area of the varnish does clean up with xylene.  When I acquired it, it was covered with rosin.  The bass bar is modern but appears to be added later because scraper marks are visible underneath it.  The neck is original in composition, but at some point reshaped and filed at the heel so that the distance from heel to horn is 4 3/8 inches.  The font on the label appears 19th century to me.  The lining is inlaid into the blocks with clear dados visible in the end block.  the stamp is in the center of the neck block.  The neck angle measures out at about 5 1/2 degrees.  Mitered corners, clear, straight rasp lines in the back.  Photograph does not clearly duplicate glow in varnish.  Scroll carving is rough, purfling is inscribed.  I will try to post the pictures.  Thanks for the help and the very useful website you have!

Regards,

randy

Dear Glassman,

The site is telling me I have reached my limit on pictures I can post.  Rather than edit what I have posted, I would be happy to e-mail them to you.

Regards

I think we would all like to see more photos, so I've bumped the limit up to 10MB. If possible, try to limit each image to less than 1MB.

Dear Phil,

Thanks again for the fine assistance.  I have cropped this set of photos.  I have a side and front shot of the scroll and peg box, but none from the back.  I also have shot of end block and neck block.  If I can get them on.  If not, I'll crop the previously posted ones.

Regards.

Here are the block pictures.  The end block has dados cut in to receive the lining.  the treble side lining is apparent in this regard, the bass side broken free.  the neck block has a stamp struck into it.

Thanks!
