Dear Mr. Thornton,

I was sure that you will take a chance and go through the door that Mr. Margolis had left open with leaving the possibility of another Guranerius existence. Fortunately it happened, because at least, credits for this excellent topic belong to you. You were the first who have shared the “other G.” hypothesis with us on this Forum.

Your explanation of using different letters could satisfied my curiosity, and also I can easy imagine a coexistence of two (three?) Jos(f)efs. Through discussion it appears that I am not the only one.

As I have already written, we have possibility to use all advantages of computer age; mutual communication, but on the first place contemporary software make possible comparative analysis about which the experts, not so many years ago, could only dream. Sometimes even photo shop is very helpful. Some weeks ago I have played a little; I had overlap f-hole, almost the same as that on the photo of yours (maybe it was even this), with the f-hole of violin from 1717, attributed to “other G.” They were almost identical, which makes me very, very satisfied. Once again, wish you a lot success.

Sincerely,

Amateur

Hi Amateur,

Thank you for the kind words. The "mysteries" of ancient violin making history are difficult unravel, but it's lots of fun trying!! Digital photo imaging software has been very useful to me. I enjoy creating all manner of collages for comparing the outlines, ff holes, heads, and even the wood used for the backs in similar instruments by the same maker. I am (hopefully) adding a link to an image which illustrates two violins side by side. And, perhaps later on--- if you don't mind, I would like to post comparative images of your viola with a violin that looks to be quite similar. Would appreciate hearing from you in the affirmative.

Thanks,

John A. Thornton

Hi John,

Has looked yours collage on http://groups.msn.com/violinCAD/shoebox.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=114. The violins, undoubtedly, are made by one maker. It is visible not only in the sizes and the form and a manner of execution, but also a place of drawing the letters, signs, and symbols, identical on both violins. But the right violin later, than left. Though I am not confident, that the left violin, corresponds to 1717. Most really, that it is work of the end 1720, the beginnings of 1730th years. The right violin can be attributed to work after 1737-1740.

“Who really WAS the Joseph Guarneri given the nickname "del Gesu"?”

The answer to this question as snow ball whom, can generate an avalanche which will destroy all “harmonous system” history Italian violin-makers school, XVII-XVII centuries, which so have scrupulously constructed during centuries, including Hills, Beare, Biddulph, Chiesa, Rosengard, Santora and many others. And it can lead to chaos. It is necessary to you?

OK, I think that's enough. I'm closing this topic as it seems to be heading into outer space. I have nothing against new (or in this case, old) theories, but only if they can be backed up with some credible evidence.
