Where can I find more info on this fine maker? What are the prices these days for a Contreras Cello and Violin?

How many cello's are known to exsist and were any viola's made by him?

I'm not aware of any recent research that has been done on Contreras and I don't think anyone has ever tried to identify all his instruments, but he is getting more and more respect. Along with Lupot, he is now considered one of the best non-Italian makers from the 18th century, though it's likely that he was trained in Italy. If anyone knows more about him, I'd love to hear about it.

In the early 1990's Beare's in London showed me a violin which they believed to be made by Contreras.  They explained that they had undertaken substantial restoration to make it playable, and I noticed that it had a label inside that appeared to be a photo-copy.   In spite of that, they were asking £50,000.

At that time, there appeared to be very few instruments by this maker in circulation, and so it seemed to me impossible to establish a market rate.  I often wonder if anyone ever purchased it for the asking price.
