I recently came across a Jean Baptiste Vuillaume Cello that someone is selling for a paltry $890 USD.
It has a fairly large crack in the lower bout that's been repaired according to the owner.
Even with the crack, I can't imagine why someone would be selling a JB Vuillaume for less than $1K unless the crack has significantly impacted the tone. So I've come up with a few possibilities
1. The person simply has no idea what he has.
2. It's a fake.
3. The tone has been destroyed by the crack or has never sounded good.
4. Some other scam.
I'm pretty skeptical as to the authenticity of this instrument. From looking pics of other JB Vuillaume instruments, the cello simply doesn't look to have the typical markers one would expect to see on a 150yo instrument.
Anyone out there who can lend a more educated eye?
