Anyone for numerology? In honor of our 25th quiz, and the approaching holiday on Dec. 25, pharus has put together a very clever quiz featuring the number 25. Send your answers to info@cozio.com. The first five to submit the correct answers will receive a free 1-month cozio.com subscription (or an extension to your existing subscription). And remember, you can also earn a 1-month subscription by contributing the next quiz.

We're looking for a well-known violin maker with a particular affinity to the number 25. His working years, from the first instrument attributed to him till his death, number 60. 50 (e.g., 2 times 25). The last instrument attributed to him is actually dated one year after his death, and if you add up the digits of this date, they equal 25. The instrument itself was once sold for $25,000. This maker apprenticed with another famous maker, and the number of characters in their two names (master & apprentice) is also 25!

Identify this maker and the first and last instruments attributed to him.

Disregard that part about him working 50 years. He actually worked 60 years, if we're to believe his first labeled instrument. Sorry if that threw anyone off.

Congratulations to lvomsema, wth, sheardjodo, Yarikanna and mlv, the first 5 to submit the correct answer ... which was Andrea Guarneri, who was born in 1626 and died in 1698. His first instrument, according to the Hills, was made in 1638 when he was just 12 years old. The last instrument attributed to him was made in 1699. This instrument was sold in 1974 for $25,000. Guarneri's teacher was Nicolo Amati, whose names has 11 characters. 'Andrea Guarneri' has 14 characters, so together they make 25.

Happy holidays to everyone. The next quiz will be posted in 2010!
