| A Cozio member has sent me the images of an nteresting instrument, which looks like it might be by Albani. Anyone have any thoughts about who made this instrument or when?

Hello Phil, hello evrbdy!
by the way , thank for the inside about the Senn Roy book, Phil.
This violin looks beautiful, but could it be possible to have better photos, so to say, more deatiled? scroll for example, a left F hole, and purfling on the Cbouts area?
it looks in a good state of preservation , the varnish........ does it?

ok, message n.3
considering the F holes, they look to me a tiny more recent, and not so accurate.
i'll give a better look in the next days, but if one compares with a photo i found on Brompton
http://www.bromptonsauctioneers.com/Reference-Guide/Yearbook/Yearbook.html?addcode=0&basename=albani+mathias_bolzano-circa1690&compareimage=albani+mathias_bolzano-circa1690&display=detailed_images&img_dir=images%2Fstories%2Fyearbook%2F&img_file=albani+mathias_bolzano-circa1690-f.jpg&instr_type=f&makerlocation=Bolzano&makername=Albani&makeryear=1690&optionID=27653&x=73&y=177
or in cozio's
can notice a different craftmanship...... maybe i'm wrong......

| I compared the pictures to the Albani's on the Cozio websight and cannot find sufficient similarities to attribute this instrument to Albani. The Albani's I have seen had a more angular arching and a more Germanic look than this one. Perhaps this violin is more important than an Albani? It is certainly very beautiful. Does it have a label? Also, how would you rate the sound quality?

I think it is a pretty violin. I have to agree with a posting before that the photos are not optimal, but you can see that for sure it is no crab violin.
It would be interesting to see if the scroll from the front and the whole violin to see the proportions better. Also, a sideshot to see the arching would be interesting. From looking to the front it seems to have a pretty high arching in the middle. Also that would help to determine at least the school, maybe also a particular maker.
Anyway I would suggest to take this violin to a reputable dealer or connaiseur to get more information. I am sure that the violin might be worth. Also, it is a bit unusual to see violins still in baroque setup. Is the neck still original??
As I see that Albani varied his style of f-holes regarding the violins here in the database I think the difference between them is negociable. Look at ID=7853 (also in baroque setup), except of the f-hole tops the varnish and style seems similar, as well as the shape and purfling.
Best,
pharus
