In a week or so, I will be visiting Vienna and Budapest. Are there any good collections of violins I should visit in either city?

In Vienna, The Kunsthistorisches Museum.  It had housed the largest single collection of Stainers at one point, (including the Ex-Hammerle Cello from quiz number 4) along with various Italians.  If you do a search on the Cozio site for "Kunsthistorisches Museum", a bunch of instruments should hit.  Any city that housed Beethoven and Mozart, has just GOTTA have some good fiddles!  Best wishes and hope you have a wonderful time!

As a matter of fact, I will be spending some time at the KHM as I have been invited to study some violin cases in their collection which have never been published.

The only violin I know about is the one acquired by Kaiserin Maria Theresia made of ivory and tortoiseshell so I'm very pleased you mentioned the Stainers.

Is it reasonable to suppose that as Budapest was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, all good fiddles would have gravitated to Austria?

Hello,

the Kunsthistorisches Museum is a good idea, although you cant always access to all the instruments.
The National Bank of Austria houses a fund of old stringed instruments, but all of them are normally out for loan, sometimes they make exhibitions with them, as far as I know there are none of them going on right now.
If you want to see nice violins of course it is also good to see some luthiers and dealers. Around the opera house there are a lot of them..

Here some useful links:

http://www.orpheon.org/OldSite/Seiten/Abra/bienvenido-dt.htm i am not kind of sure and i was never there to see the collection but it might be worth a try.. if you saw it please post here how it was..

I know also that at the moment in the Castle Esterhazy in Eisenstadt there is a big exhibition about Haydn, might be also interesting.

Best,
pharus

Hi Pharus.

I think you are the one I want to contact when I go to Vienna!

Best wishes

Well, I visited the khm in Vienna and it is true, they have one of the finest collections of musical instruments in the world, exquisite lutes of ivory and ebony etc but time was limited and I saw little more than the violin cases. Dr Hopfner acquired a rather nice Betts a year ago with what seems to be its original bow and case. It was quite an experience clattering along marbled halls in the Burghof to visit rooms full display cases with instruments in them.

If there were nice violins, I didn't see them so perhaps a follow up is necessary.

if you plan to go to museums it is always good not to be in a hurry and to bring plenty of time.

i am happy you saw at least something
did you try some other stuff or was there only time for the khm?

for me the favourite part is always also playing those violins which might be difficult in most museums..(on the other hand I can understand them..)

best,
pharus

PS: one add to budapest, i know it is a bit late: the original esterhazy-baryton (where all the baryton-trios from haydn were written for!) is hosted in the national museum in budapest (or another big one..dont remember. i know they wanted to get it to the haydn exhibition but the hungarians didnt want to give it to austria even for the exhibition!)
