I would be glad to hear any thoughts about the identity of a recently purchased violin (photos attached). Label reads "Nicolas Lupot Luthier rue Croix des petits Champs a Paris l'an 1816". Varnish is lovely and the tone is wonderful. I'm just curious about who made it.

All opinions gratefully received!

1816 was an interesting time in Lupot's life. Maybe compare this violin with instrument pictures on this site...then take it to someone reputable.

looking at the varnish i would not believe at first that Nicolas Lupot did this work. however, it can be the light and the photograph as the model seems to fit. i would recommend also to take it to a dealer as it does not seem to be in this database here as far as I saw.

to add: i think the id=8493 and id=7848 are the same violin, also when the quality of photo is amazingly different. there you can also see how a violin varnish can change only because of a photograph. (phil, if you read it and are not of the same opinion leave it, but i think those two are the same violins...)

to make it short, DWG, i think you have a violin that is worth more investigation. the similarity of http://www.cozio.com/Picture.aspx?id=12796 this top to your violin (f-holes, also the shape) is obvious.

best,
pharus

Hi pharus,

I took a look but I think 8493 and 7848 are different instruments. The fronts, in particular look different.

Hey Phil,

Hope you enjoyed your holidays!
I thought it might come from the different resolutions and b/w however. In my eyes the same parts also in the front are lighter and darker in both violins.
Also the provenance could be put together..

But of course it can be that there are two of those violins that look quite similar

Have a nice day
