Quiz 14 - Enlarged and enhanced There are some instruments from famous makers that are built in smaller dimensions than ususal. The instrument we are looking for this time was once a small violin but is believed to have been enlarged by a famous French luthier. On this occasion, it also received a second line of purfling. The instrument was later owned by a famous violinist whose name it now bears. Later it passed through hands of dealers and of an auction house and today is on display at an American institution. Who made the violin? Who is the luthier who probably enlarged the instrument? Who was the violinist who owned the instrument?

| The answer to this quiz is the 1618 Brothers Amati violin once owned by Henri Vieuxtemps. The violin was enlarged at some point, probably by Nicolas Lupot. As of 1979 the instrument was part of the Smithsonian Collection in Washington, D.C. and is, as far as we know, still there. Congratulations to Yarrikanna, hanbin56, Enthusiast, mlv & sheardjodo for submitting the first 5 correct answers, and thanks again to Pharus for submitting the quiz.
