Hey,
it seems you have a nice violin. The pegs and the non-purfled corpus is quite particular. I think it has some character, however, it is not an old strad as you estimated already, I am sure I have not seen a model like this since now (maybe there are some users with more experience!), but I would put this violin also in the large production around 1900 in Germany (also because of the varnish that is quite close to those Stainer-copies that come around quite often).
In any case, if you want a hint from me, PLEASE put the bridge straight as soon as possible. If you tune this violin only a bit the bridge will fall down and if you leave it like this the bridge bends to the wrong side...
So if possible just loose the strings a bit and then put the bridge straight!
Ole Bull (b1810; d1880), Norwegian violinist, played a lot of instruments and was a virtuose player. If you want to find more infos on him just put his name in the textbox of cozio database! But I am sure he never played that instrument, and also the year 1765 seems more to be the hint to the "model"...
Best,
pharus

| Hey Pharus, Thank you for all your compliments and suggestions on the above posted violin pictures in reference to it's identity. My husband posted them for me in an attempt to seek information on it's true idenity and possibly gain some of it's history as well. The violin is mine, a family heirloom, which I have inherited recenty from my dad, which was given to him by his dad,who was from Riga, Latvia, bringing it with him to the United States back in 1907, according to documentation that I have, which is about as much as I know about it. I'm curious about this type of violin, because of it's age.I'm searching for as much information that I can gain, so it can be passed on to my family, as well. Again thank you for all your knowledge that you have shared with me. RubyDee Visit: http://www.reflectionsfromthepast.com

Hey Ruby,
I am happy if you can do something with the infos. Concerning the pegs I would be also interested why those form of pegs (normally used for double-basses because of the extreme weight and tension of the strings) is sometimes also used for violins. I do not know much about those style of pegs but maybe out there there might be some people that can explain us why it was used for some violins.
I think the weight and the high quantity of metal might change the tone to a different direction than usually luthiers and musicians seek.
For me (as I am violinist) it is also very important how an instrument sounds and if you want your violin to maintain its condition I would suggest that you play it also...
Best,
pharus

I'm afraid people maybe don't want to be rude about your violin, which looks like one of millions made in Saxony at the end of the 19th century, of dubious craftsmanship. Believe me, there is nothing very interesting about it.
Sorry but someone had to say it, rather than just passing on it.

| Hey Rat, Thank you for your valuable information regarding "your violin." I do appreciate any information that anyone has regarding it.I also thank you for expressing your opinion on why others may not be responding to my question pertaining to the true identity of this type of violin. I,being a lady,am one that does not take offense easily.I can, as the saying goes..."dish it out as well as take it." I find the rudeness more in tune with being ignored or passing it along without expressing an opinion on it. Seems to me, the ones that do carry the knowledge of violins would be glad to share with the reading audience their expertize in the subject of violins. I have reseached and read all of cozio.com knowledge and I have found lots of useful information.Maybe someone would be so kind as to provide me with the exact links to knowledge of this type of violin. If no one cares to share...Ohhhh Well..I shall continue my research in finding the true identity of my violin...and/or...Maybe I should try reseaching it as it has been named in writing describing my violin as "your violin."

Ruby,
From pictures, one can only ever go so far. Take your violin to a kind, knowledgeable person near you and they should be able to give you a definitive answer.
Am I missing something about "your" violin/ "my violin"????
