Notes

"Hermann’s co-principal in the Bayreuth Orchestra, a certain Busowski, expressed his desire to Hermann to obtain this viola one day. After Hermann’s death and with the events of the Second World War, the instrument disappeared in Eastern Germany. Busowski was then a principal violist in the North German Orchestra in Hanover, West Germany. Soon after the war, someone smuggled the viola across from East Germany in a box of clothes, where it narrowly escaped being found by the border guards, and brought it to Busowski. How it was known after all those years that Busowski wanted the instrument, remains a mystery. When Busowski reached retirement he sold the viola to its present owner, who at that time himself was co-principal violist of North German Radio Symphony Orchestra."

I originally took the photos that are displayed the this site for instrument 5183 - a viola ascribed to Tecchler. I know the viola well and have several CDs in which it is used to play viola sonatas. It has fabulous tone.

It's history is true - that it belonged to Hermann - the principal violist for the Bayreuth orchestra, etc, and later to Busowski. However, I've changed my view that this is a Tecchler. He famously made viola no 3 in 1730 and actually inscribed it as "La Terze viola". All three those violas are accounted for. The viola was probably not T's favorite instrument and one can assume that if had made one more after no 3, he would also have numbered it. He died in 1748 so in the last 18 years it is technically possible that he could have made another viola, or two, but not really likely, as he only made 2 in the 40 years preceding 1730. (This viola is unlabelled).

But more than anything, this instrument simply doesn't look anything like a Tecchler, at least not like any Tecchler that is displayed on Cozio. The f-holes and just about everything else is different for known Tecchlers. So, I really dispute that this is the work of Tecchler.
