| I was taught for a while by RS after he retired from the BBC around 1963. I remember him well as a kind and funny man and tried to maintain contact with him (although I didn't see him often) right up to his death in his 90's. I heard so much about this violin which I believe his parents bought him for his 21st birthday(?). I lived in the hope of seeing this prize possession of his - but it wasn't to be! He studied with Szevcik in Prague and returned to England before WW2, which interupted his carreer. After that I believe he played in (co lead?) RLPO, and layed for the BBC. His funny stories, I still recount to my own pupils. I wish I could have heard the record he made, but sadly, he sat on it when he returned from the pub one evening! Treasure this violin, it belonged to a very nice old gentleman who still lives on in his stories! Maybe one day I will see it!

Robert Silvester was a great uncle of mine. I never met him but have heard many stories from my relatives. He spent his vacation time touring the world by boat and living up the lifestyle, he made many trips to Australia to see his cousins. Would love to hear about his career from anyone who knew him as we do not have much information in this great man.
Would appreciate any correspondence, please email me at rodk@sunguru.com
