| Thanks everybody for the cheers, and I fully realize that I am far luckier to have obtained this strad than I have any legitimate right to be. Still, it's a heck of a lot of fun (except for the earplug I have to wear in my left ear for extended practice). And Panira, thanks for sharing the picture of the Duke. It looks like one of those great old English fiddles with an exemplary back and a top that shows a history of being a preferred playing instrument. I have often found these to be among the best sounding instruments. I can't wait to see this Tyrol you have. How would you characterize the sound of it vs. the Duke?

Oh yes! I forgot that I hadn't posted the tyrol photos yet!
Hm, to compare:
The Duke is wonderfully sweet, but not overly so, it still has the power to carry across a hall. It is amazingly clear and singing in the higher positions, very even across all strings. Fairly loud under the ear. VERY powerful if you want it to be. Earplugs are a good idea. Tinnitus stinks.
The Tyrol has a HUGE booming voice, but clear. It also carries for miles. It will do positively anything you ask it to, from soft and sweet to huge and booming. I've used it from Biber's sonatas (very baroque) to things like Tzigane.

I'll post a better picture of the duke's back when I add the Tirol's pictures. It's beautiful. The quality of the wood is amazing as well. Mr. Richard Duke sure knew how to pick a great piece of wood!
Just looked through my photos, the only ones I have of both are HUGE!  I'll try to take some tomorrow at quartet practice, though I think I'm bringing the Duke, not sure yet.
