| Where can I find more info on this fine maker? What are the prices these days for a Contreras Cello and Violin? How many cello's are known to exsist and were any viola's made by him?

| I'm not aware of any recent research that has been done on Contreras and I don't think anyone has ever tried to identify all his instruments, but he is getting more and more respect. Along with Lupot, he is now considered one of the best non-Italian makers from the 18th century, though it's likely that he was trained in Italy. If anyone knows more about him, I'd love to hear about it. -Cozio

| In the early 1990's Beare's in London showed me a violin which they believed to be made by Contreras. They explained that they had undertaken substantial restoration to make it playable, and I noticed that it had a label inside that appeared to be a photo-copy. In spite of that, they were asking £50,000. At that time, there appeared to be very few instruments by this maker in circulation, and so it seemed to me impossible to establish a market rate. I often wonder if anyone ever purchased it for the asking price.
