Hello, I am the owner of the Simone Cimapane violoncello and the author of all those photos. Curious, that it is not in the database at Cozio.
This particular violoncello has a history. It is mentiones expresis verbis in the Encyclopedia by Vannes, where the author states that Cimapane is a fine Roman maker of the 17th century and that the luthier Leonori in Rome owned a cello made in 1692 by that maker. Well, it just so happens that I purchased this very same cello from Mrs. Leonori, the Niece of the luthier, in Rome.
Simone Cimapane may not have built so many instruments because he was also a player. Both he and his son performed in the orchestra of Arcangelo Corelli. So we can certify to the fact that this cello only 300 years ago stood and played under the direction of that master the concerti grossi which made musical history. And today we employ this very same cello in the performance of the Concerti Grossi by Corelli. Quite a particular experience for players and listeners, I must say.
I will talt to the people at Cozio to include this cello in their database, but perhaps we will have to take some nicer photos of the instrument for their archive.
All the best,
José Vázquez
