Hi,

few days ago I met a violinist playing an interesting violin. It is a Jean Baptiste Vuillaume with unoriginal varnish. Instrument is in good condition besides the varnish, which looks good but definetely not like the one that Vuillaume used. And the most important thing: it sounds amazing, I think it's best Vuillaume I've ever tried.

Owner wants 50 000 Euro for it, do you think this price is fair ? Probably it wouldn't be possible to get a good certificate for it because of the varnish...

here is the deal: a good Del Gesu Vuillaume goes for $170 to $185, partly because Hilary Hahn uses one, and the strads model goes up for around $140-$160. now, if you are a player and looking for a great sound in a violin, then this fiddle will be a bargain, eventhough you have to make sure of the authenticity by bring it to one of the major dealers if it doe not have any certificate.

i have seen a Vuillaume that was never been played on, in fact, one of his student had varnished the violin after he died....and it sounds terrible! so, you never know....

i think you should try to make a good deal out of this violin, although  50000 euros doesn't sound too bad consider it is a Vuillaume.

good luck!

Good views, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.

I agree, though I think he means $160k mind you, $160 wouldn't get you much of a violin at all.

Get a well respected luthier or auction house to give you an estimate on it, they could tell you more holding it than we can hearing about it.

best wishes with your new violin, if you get it!

Thank you very much for replies. Maybe one day I'll be lucky owner of this violin... Right now the present owner still plays it so I will have to wait until he retires
